There are approximately 1.5 million people crammed into an area half the size of Seoul. About 1 million of them are living under the poverty line in camps, receiving aid from various organisations. Over 60% of Gaza’s children suffer from malnutrition. And now, tens of thousands of refugees, many of whom were already displaced from their homes, have been rendered homeless yet again.
Hospitals, universities, schools and mosques have been destroyed. Homes have been flattened. The lack of basic necessities – food, water, medical supplies, shelter – has devastated the local population. There is no electricity, and no running water.
According to the January 13 UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) field update, "between 27 December and 13 January (an estimated) 971 Gaza have been killed, 311 of whom are children (32 percent). The number of injured stands at 4418, of whom 1549 are reportedly children (35 percent)." Confronted with these facts and the exposure to these images, how can we possible turn a blind eye? And how can we possibly help?
“Aid Gaza Benefit Night” (AGBN) has been created to bring artists in Korea together to help raise funds for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). According to the UNRWA website, approximately half the population of Gaza (750,000 Gazans) rely on UNRWA Food Aid. They also operate 18 clinics throughout Gaza. But currently all schools are shut, and hospitals are under-equipped and under-staffed. On January 15, three Israeli shells destroyed a warehouse at the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza destroying hundreds of tons of food and medicine. An estimated $330 million is needed for urgent aid.
The night will showcase a variety of charity performances by local and foreign artists such as live music, dance, readings, and other acts. There will be a cultural section on Palestine, and a performance of a traditional Palestinian folkloric dance called a “dabke”. There will also be several lucky door prize giveaways, thanks to the generosity of local businesses. The night will round up with everyone on the dance floor to participate in a dabke, and then dancing to Arabic music.
There will be a cover charge of 20,000 with all proceeds going to the UNRWA Special Gaza Appeal. Those unable to attend AGBN can still make donations.
AGBN is not anti-Israeli, its sole function is as a fundraiser for the Palestinian refugees in Gaza and West Bank, with particular focus on Gaza where they urgently need medical equipment, medicine, food, water and shelter.

약 400,000명 이상의 사람이 물을 공급받지 못한 채 살아가고 있음
5,000여 채 이상의 건물이 완전히 파괴되었으며 이와 별개로 20,000여 채 이상의 건물이 손상을 입고 있음
AGBN은 한국에 거주하는 아티스트들을 모아 UNRWA(United Nations Relief and Works Agency) 을 위한 모금활동을 돕기 위해 만들어졌습니다. 이 행사에서는 한국과 외국의 아티스트들의 라이브 음악, 춤, 강독 및 시 낭송 등 다양한 자선공연이 열립니다. 또한 지역 기업들의 후원을 받아 팔레스타인에 대한 문화 섹션이 열리고 소정의 상품 추첨 이벤트가 열립니다. 본 행사는 모든 참여자들이 함께 아랍음악에 맞추어 춤을 추면서 마무리 될 예정입니다.
2만원의 참가비가 있으며, 참가비 전액은 Gaza 지역 주민을 돕기 위한 UNRWA Special Gaza Appeal 활동에 사용됩니다.
